In 1885, when gold was discovered in sleepy Klerksdorp, the
town was hit by prospecting fever, taking many prospectors on a dizzying
ride from rags to riches and often back to rags again. While
today, Vaal River Operations produce about twenty percent of the country‘s
total gold, mining is only one of many industries operating in this
city of people.
Today, the city‘s 200,000 residents enjoy the best of
both worlds - small town living with modern facilities. With a total
of more than thirty schools and colleges, residents of Klerksdorp are
ensured the highest standard of education. Klerksdorp is also home
to numerous sports clubs, swimming pools, golf courses, game reserves
and recreational resorts at the Klerksdorp Dam.
Worth special mention is the fact that, in a survey by the National
Interim Consultative Body for Local Government, Klerksdorp proved to
be the best performer regarding general efficiency. Being number-one
in the country demonstrates how the people of Greater Klerksdorp have
taken hands to stand together. Next
